We have started our Summer hours. Monday through Wednesday 10 AM-6PM, Thursday 10 AM-8 PM, Friday 9 AM-3 PM. Closed Saturdays & Sundays. We will be having an extended 4th of July weekend and will be closed Monday July 5.

We are also having a 1 Cent Sale on our used & weeded books. Come on in and find a bargain.

GOOD NEWS FOR PEMBINA COUNTY PATRONS

Good news friends! The Pembina Co. Library board worked out an agreement with our library board. It still needs to be approved by our board but I think it will be approved. We will be able to continue to allow you to check out materials. You still will be required to sign in when you check out materials. Interlibrary loans will still have to be done through the libraries in Pembina County: Cavalier, Walhalla, and Pembina.

We're looking forward to being able to serve you.

PEMBINA COUNTY RESIDENTS LOSE SERVICE AT CARNEGIE REGIONAL LIBRARY.

Dear Pembina County Patrons,

Due to non-payment of fees and no declaration of intent to pay or work out payment, after 2 years of unpaid service we will be discontinuing service to all Pembina County residents as of April 9, 2010. If you wish to continue service you will have to pay a yearly nonrefundable fee of $20.00/individual or $30.00/family.

I’m sorry we have to do this but to continue to provide service to Pembina County would be to cheat the residents of the other counties that continue to support us with their taxes. We have been patient with your county library board but have received no replies to our inquiries.

Contact your Pembina County Library Board members if you have questions. You will probably have to contact your Pembina County Auditor to find out who they are. Good Luck.

Sorry it has been so long since my last posting. We have met our 1st match for the Gates Computer Grant. It's only the beginning but we have some breathing room now, but soon we will have to do more fundraising for the second match of the grant.

Boy, am I a little behind or what? We've been working to get out the news about the need for funds to match the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grant for new computers. We've done mailings (thanks go to Jean Clark & Pat Dusek). We've been given exposure by both the Walsh County Record and KXPO News. Funds are starting to come in already.

We thank those who may already have given to the computer match fund and ask others out there to think about it some more. If for some reason you cannot find your way to give money for new computers but still wish to show your support, feel free to give a general donation for our day-to-day operations or a specific one for books, children's books, dvds, or audiobooks. Help is needed in all these areas and others. Please specify if you want them used for other uses than the computers.

MONEY PROBLEMS

We actually have 2 areas where we have money problems. First, as the year gets closer to the end the finances get tighter. Since most people pay their property taxes at the beginning of the year or at the very end that is when we get most of our money. In past years donations have helped us get through the last few months supplementing the little tax money that continues to come in. This year donations have been slow to come in. This means fewer new materials for the public to use. With school starting and colder weather coming it also means more demand for our materials. This makes for a tough combination.

Secondly, we need to come up with matching funds for a Gates computer grant. At this point we still have a long way to go to meet the requirements. If we do not come up with this match it may be a long time before we can afford new computers.

Please give us all the help you can.

Latest Audiobooks & 1 Cent Sale

Before listing some of our latest audio books, I want to mention that we are having a one cent sale on our used books. This will continue until September 19.

We have a good collection of books on CD and on audio cassette. They come in handy when traveling. We have a good radio station here with KXPO but when you get beyond its reception area you may get bored with radio. Books on audio cassette & CD can be a new source of entertainment and self education. If you spend long hours in your vehicle or if you are tired of the constant drone of the television at home, enjoy an audio book. Listening to audio books helps you keep up with some of the latest books being talked about among your friends while letting you continue on with your work. They can also be a way of filling dead time with continuing education. Here is a list of some of the titles available:

GRANT FOR NEW COMPUTERS NEEDS YOUR HELP

We have received a grant from the Gates Library Foundation for 7 new computers for the Grafton library over two years but we need your help. These are matching grants and require us to raise matching funds. For the first years match we need to raise 2600$ and in the second year we need 3900$

We also received grants for our branch libraries in Aneta & Adams. The branch libraries will each receive one computer for each year of the grant. Both of these require a 650$ match for year one and and a 1300$ match for year two.

Our first year total is 3900$. In year two we will need 6500$. Our two year total for all libraries is 10, 400$.

A Couple of New Movies.

I hope everyone had a good Memorial Day weekend. We have added a couple of new movies recently. Hancock played by Will Smith is the story of a man with super powers that is not comfortable with his role as hero. Munich is based on a true story of revenge. After the killing of Israeli Athletes by terrorists at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, an Israeli assassination team was sent out to get even.
